Ad Libitum
Ad Libitum is a fictional project I created during the editorial design module of my Online Master in Graphic Design at LABASAD. For the final project taught by the incredible Stuart Tolley, we had to design ten spreads for a magazine of our choice, creating everything from the name and topics to its visual identity.
As someone who’s both a music lover and a musician-in-progress, the theme came to me naturally. I imagined Ad Libitum as a local, independent magazine dedicated to documenting the vibrant music scene of the Basque Country. Each issue would focus on a specific theme, and for this project, I decided to center the first edition on jams.
I went all in, mapping out what this issue could include. It would kick off with a historical piece on the origins of jams, followed by a guide to all the spots in the region where you can join or watch one—bars, associations, clubs, and more. The core of the magazine would dive deeper, exploring jams through three perspectives: the organizers, the musicians, and the audience, with interviews bringing their voices to life.
For the design, I focused on key pages: the cover, the table of contents, an article about the jam sessions at Newquay, featuring its organizers, and another on La Groovance, with its founder. While the interviews were fictional, the photos were very real—shot by me at a Newquay jam night and during La Groovance’s opening party.
Who knows? Maybe one day this fictional project will turn into something real.
